Versotale is an Undertale "What-If" AU in which the monsters won the human-monster battle, causing the humans to be trapped Underground.
Notable Changes[]
Character Changes[]
- The protagonist is a teenage Asriel Dreemurr with a personality combining that of his childlike and Flowey personas from canon.
- He wears the same striped shirt as he does in Undertale, though his fur is noticeably more unkempt. He has a life on the Surface that he desperately desires to return to.
- The first fallen monster is Undyne, a once-famous royal guard captain on the Surface. One day, she went missing, and hasn't been seen since.
- Her style of narration differs significantly from Chara's, and she actively talks with Asriel.
- Frisk is the caretaker of Versotale's first area, providing a tutorial for Asriel as Toriel did to learn the basics of attacking, which are later expanded upon by Asthana.
- Frisk likes to try lightening the mood with jokes, and always will try talking things out, attempting to cheer others up.
- The purple chrysanthemum flower, Asthana, takes the Flowey role of Versotale.
- They sport a very formal tone and seem to have an active grudge against Frisk.
- Unlike Undertale, Asthana is formally introduced to Asriel in Part 4, despite their brief appearance in Part 1.
- Sans's role is filled by Spade, the stand-in for the Justice Soul.
- He is a cold-western cowboy obsessed with bringing justice, no matter the cost, and no matter how long it takes.
- Papyrus's role is filled by Pepper, Spade's sister, and the stand-in for the Kindness Soul.
- In a previous iteration of Versotale, Pepper was a royal guard in training who loved to cook, but also desired to show the royal guard captain that monsters don't have to be killed in order to break the Barrier. However, the creator confirms that she is to change drastically in the latest Versotale reboot.
- The mysterious Captain Donavan is the leader of the Underground's royal guard who has not been seen by anyone aside from a few people he trusts, and is shrouded in mystery.
Environmental Changes[]
- The Ruins is replaced by "Perditus Castle." Its interior is made of wooden walls with cobblestone floors. Red carpets are laid down that lead from room to room as well. Frisk is in charge of Perditus.
- The Snowdin area of Versotale is referred to as "The Cold West." As the name implies, it is inspired by several old-western towns, but it takes place in a cold desert. The AU creator confirms that the Cold West's story will change drastically from its current iteration in the latest Versotale reboot.
General Changes[]
- The Barrier requires the monster magic of seven monsters to be broken, as humans do not have the same magical prowess that monsters possess.
- The battle mechanics seek to combine Undertale's black-and-white battle system with Deltarune's magic and TP mechanics. Asriel also has several magic spells that directly reference Ralsei's spells, such as "Heal Prayer" and "Pacify."
Trivia[]
- Verstamech named the AU "Versotale" because the outcome of the human-monster war was reversed. (The humans being trapped in an Underground with the monsters living peacefully on the Surface)
- While the AU follows a loose Undertale-like role structure, the characters do not all fit into specific roles, and the ones that do act drastically different from the character they take the place of.
- In the AU's initial conception, Undyne was to have the same hatred for humans as Chara did and would have tried to convince Asriel into a Genocide Run.
